Back in Business

Well I’ve been gone for 2 weeks, and lots has happened in the interim. At first I was a little surprised when I saw that the Nationals released Shawn Hill. He was scheduled to pitch tomorrow, and I figured if he went 2 appearances in a row without experiencing any discomfort, he might finally be getting healthy. But then I thought more about it. Hill was proclaimed “healthy” after his last appearance. Releasing him while he’s healthy means the Nationals only owe him $129,166 of his $775,000 salary for the season. And they just signed Joe Beimel to a one-year, $2 million deal. So the net effect here is that they are only paying out $1.35 million at this point, if they fill Hill’s spot from within. I agree he had nasty stuff when healthy, but I also feel that we gave him a lot of time to get healthy, and the injury bug just kept getting him. We didn’t need to drag this out like we did with Patterson where everyone kept focusing on the potential, when in reality, Hill only appeared in 37 games the last five seasons.

Doesn’t it seem like every time you look, Emilio Bonifacio has a multi-hit game for Florida? I hope Willingham and Olsen prove their worth if it turns out we gave away a budding star in Bonifacio
